How to Shut Off Your Water Heater
Need help shutting off your water heater?
Follow these easy steps for either Gas or Electric Water Heaters:
Gas Water Heaters
- Turn off the gas using the valve located on your water. Just turn the valve clockwise to the OFF position.
- Shut off the water supply to the water heater.
Electric Water Heaters
- Using your home’s electrical panel, find the breaker marked
“Water Heater” and click it to the OFF position.- If you’re not sure which breaker is connected to your Water Heater, you can turn the whole panel off.
- Shut off the water supply to the water heater.

- If your water heater is leaking and there is no water valve, you may need to turn off your water supply at the water meter.
- Make sure to unplug any accessories you find around your water heater, such as an electric recirculating pump.
