Why Dirty Coils Are a Problem For Your Home
Your air conditioning system has one job: remove heat from your home and exhaust it outside. Two of the most critical components of its ability to do this are the evaporator coil and the condensing coil. Here at Goettl, we offer air conditioning maintentance for all different types of systems and we wanted to share a little bit about why keeping those coils clean is so important.
Common AC Repair: Dirty Coils
In order to understand why dirty coils are such a problem for your AC, you need to know a little bit about how they work.
Central air conditioners typically are comprised of two separate units: an indoor evaporator unit and the outdoor condensing unit. A fan in the indoor unit pulls in warm air from your home and passes it over the very cold evaporator coils which are filled with a refrigerant that absorbs the heat out of the air. The newly-cooled air then continues on into your home. The refrigerant is circulated outside carrying the heat from your home which gets exhausted at the condensing coils.
If either set of coils, the evaporator coils or the condensing coils, get dirty it can cause big problems for your home’s efficiency and comfort.
Here are a couple of problems that can arise from dirty coils:
- Not enough cooling – If the evaporator coils get covered in dirty or dust it can keep them from successfully absorbing enough heat from your home’s air. This means that the air moving into your home won’t be cool enough and your home won’t be comfortable.
- Inefficiency – Also, if the evaporator coils are dirty it will make your air conditioner have to work harder to cool your home which reduces its efficiency.
- Constant running – If your air conditioning system won’t stop running it could be because the outdoor condensing coils are dirty. This happens because the system isn’t able to exhaust any of the heat that it is absorbing out of your home. This is a huge problem because this will cause your system to experience more wear and tear which could lead to more repairs. It will also likely reduce the comfort of your home because you won’t be able to get rid of any heat from your home.
