Drain Clogs: Some Truths to Consider

There is no getting around how inconvenient plumbing problems of all shapes and sizes are. You rely on your plumbing system for so much, every day, throughout the entire day. Getting ready for work, cooking meals, washing dirty clothes, cleaning up at the end of the day. Your plumbing system is truly integral to so many different parts of your life. With that in mind, let’s reassess our opening statement. Yes, plumbing problems are inconvenient. But that’s to say the least!

Plumbing problems can really bring your daily routine grind to a halt. And once that happens, it can be tough to get things going again. And this is when it becomes really messy. Why? Because people start telling themselves that they can handle the fix on their own. It’s just a clogged drain, they tell themselves. I can handle this. I’ve got some liquid drain cleaner. I can buy a drain snake. And so it begins. And headaches follow.

There Is Some Good News

No, we are not going to tell you some secret that will make you capable of effectively handling drain cleaning services on your own. That is and always will be a job that is best left to trained professionals. However, there are plenty of adjustments that you can probably make in your day to day life that will help to limit the occurrences of clogged drains in your home. The hard truth of the matter is that many of these clogs are caused, at least in part, by behaviors that can be modified or practices that homeowners just don’t realize are detrimental.

Your Garbage Disposal Is Not a Do-It-All Appliance

Some people really seem to think that installing a garbage disposal in the kitchen means that they can put just about anything down that drain. This is not entirely true, though. There are plenty of things that should not go down the garbage disposal. Some of them, like very fibrous foods, can get wrapped up in the disposal itself and strain the device until damage is done. Then there are other materials, like pasta, beans, or liquified fats, that can and will lead to clogs.

Starchy products may go through the garbage disposal just fine, but they can take on water and swell up even after they’re processed, leading to very stubborn blockages. Then there is oil, grease, and fat to consider. Your garbage disposal is not going to do anything to manage these materials, and they will congeal as they cool in your pipes. That will also lead to serious clogs. So yes, a garbage disposal is a super helpful appliance, but only when used properly and within its intended scope.

Unfortunately, You Can’t Prevent All Problems

Being careful with your garbage disposal, using drain guards, removing hair and whiskers from drains rather than trying to flush them down through the system—all of these measures are really going to help you to cut back on the occurrence of clogs in your drains. There is really very little that you can do to prevent problems like tree roots growing into your pipes, though. When you’re planting new trees or bushes, keep the location of pipes in mind. But other than that,  just keep the possibility in mind, and keep our number handy!

...... we had an AC problem a few days later. Peter Medelez from Goettl came out and fixed it expertly and made some recommendations to ensure it won't happen again. Some things hadn't been done correctly when it was installed several years ago (by someone else), and he will be back next week to fix them. I highly recommend Goettl.

... 10/15/25 ... we had a leak in the main water line which was running into the neighbors' yard. In less than two hours of calling Goettl, Clayton Purvis arrived to fix the leak. He repaired the leak and fixed connections, and repaired something previously done incorrectly in the unknown past. He was done before we had to leave for a prior equipment. I feel confident in the quality of work, as I always am when I have to call Goettl for something.

March 2024 update.

Had Andrew come out to remove garbage disposal and repipe sink. He also swapped out 13 emergency water shut off valves in 3 bathrooms.
Andrew was professional, courteous and expedient. He did have to run out to get some supplies. He stayed until 7pm to complete the job on one trip.

May 2023 update. Technician Steve came today to do the summer rejuvenation. Friendly and professional tech. Explained the process and findings. Both systems are new, so everything checked out good. Did a god cleaning of coils and now all set for the summer season. Had them out for fall prevention service and to review the systems that are here. I just bought the house and needed to understand what was in place.

The service tech, Kevin was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. He explained and provided photos and video of all components. He ensured keeping house clean and wore booties.

My second unit is not in the best shape, and Kevin explained each of the issues. I will follow up with service managér to determine next steps (repair or replacement).

I signed up for there service plan and am very pleased with the service and communication to date

12/21 Luis C came today to do routine maintenance on hot water heater. Professional and courteous. He did a through job and explained everything.

We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Pablo arrived in the window that was promised. He was very efficient when something wasn’t working quite right. He found another workaround to inspect my heating system. He cleaned off the firing point with sandpaper as I’ve seen many other technicians. Do he inspected everything took pictures of everything and sent the pictures to me. He asked if I would be interested in a price on a new system. I told him not at this time there was no hard sell. My system is now 21 years old. I plan to replace the heater and air conditioner, but not for another few years. I found four seasons to be excellent and Goettl to be just as good.

We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out. We have had Goettl of Tucson service for about a year and thank goodness we had them to call when our AC failed and had a condensation leak in the attic . Goettl sent ROBERT out right away. He did a thorough inspection and informed us of what we already felt we needed to do with our old system. He sat down with me and went through the pros and cons of repairing the old vs replacement. He explained everything about a new Goettl system. From all the benefits, to the great warranties to the peace of mind we’d have not having to worry what would and could happen next to the old system. He was friendly, thoughtful and professional. He put in a call to TYLER in sales & finance to reach out to us. He did and went through all the models of systems Goettl has to offer and all info we needed to make a decision and give him a call back. Bobby Smith is great at explaining the options I have with my AC and Heater. He also let me know about the maintenance plan which is going to be great for me so I can always keep up to date with the AC and the heater. Also I didn't know that you did plumbing and he said I could get plumbing work done too so I am going to do that right away. I liked the photos that were taken to explain the situation on where I am at with the unit. All in all it was the best technician experience I have had since becoming a home owner in 2010. I would highly recommend Geottl and Bobby to anyone because of getting things right the first time, going out of his way to help, following up and keeping promises, and great product and technical knowledge. I'm not super informed on my home machines so it is comforting to be in good hands.
