Can I Install a New Furnace and Still Use My Pre-Existing Ducts?

The ductwork in your home is probably extensive, running through walls, under floors, and through crawlspaces. If you need to replace your current furnace because it has broken down, or perhaps has lost too much efficiency, you won’t want to go through the extra work of replacing your current ductwork system to accommodate the new furnace. People often wonder if new ductwork is a requirement for a furnace installation.

The answer is: “Usually not.” We’ll look into how this works. But for a solid answer, you’ll need to talk to an HVAC technician who can look over your house and your current furnace. Call Goettl Air Conditioning & Plumbing today and learn about what you’ll need for a new furnace installation.

You won’t need to replace your ductwork if…

You are installing a furnace similar to your current one. Your new furnace will likely have a higher efficiency rating than your old one (advances in technology have made furnaces more energy efficient in general) and include more features, but it can use the same ducts without any complications. Your installers may need to make some adjustments at the connectors, but nothing more extensive than this.

Even for most high-efficiency furnaces, you won’t need to replace any of the ductwork. Have the installers perform duct testing along the ventilation system to spot leaks or other places where the ducts might lose heat. This will give the installers an idea of how well the ductwork will handle a high-efficiency furnace. If you have taken good care of the ductwork over the years, you can expect few problems.

You may need ductwork replacement if…

The ductwork is extremely old and/or in poor shape. If you’ve experienced trouble with leaking ductwork before and have needed numerous sealing and repair jobs done, then you should consider at  least having partial ductwork replacement. HVAC installers can perform the same duct testing to find just how leaky the ducts in your home have become. Based on this, they can provide you with an estimate of how much work needs to be done to make sure that your new furnace can live up to its efficiency rating.

They said I needed to replace my a/c. I was given a choice of 5 units. I liked that the 2nd most expensive would balance the temperature in my house. I get full west in my living room in the afternoon. It is always 10 plus degrees hotter on my sofa, than rest of house. So I paid a fortune and it isn't doing what he said it would. They came back and added another vent to my living room. Better, but still not what I was told. I could saved $10k and got the cheaper model. Don't think I have much recourse to get this fixed. The technicians are very good, too bad their salesmen and products are not up to the same standard.

Chris was our HVAC specialist, he was very thorough and pointed out some new things on the app. Chris’ inspection revealed we had mold in our plenum, in the early stages. Pablo arrived in the window that was promised. He was very efficient when something wasn’t working quite right. He found another workaround to inspect my heating system. He cleaned off the firing point with sandpaper as I’ve seen many other technicians. Do he inspected everything took pictures of everything and sent the pictures to me. He asked if I would be interested in a price on a new system. I told him not at this time there was no hard sell. My system is now 21 years old. I plan to replace the heater and air conditioner, but not for another few years. I found four seasons to be excellent and Goettl to be just as good.

Today, Rodell did a thorough clean-out of our bathroom sink drains, including sending the camera down to check for build up out to the main connection to the sewer. This was included in our membership with no extra charge. He and his partner also found the mystery leak in the guest bathroom toilet and replaced the guts and seals. The thing I liked the best was his advice about maintenance and how that little hole in the sink is a real drain that also needs flushing out by letting the sink fill up periodically. We ordered a new refrigerator from Lowe’s. When they delivered it, they said they could not install the water line. We were not familiar with plumbers so we asked our neighbor who did the plumbing in his new shower. He said Goettl and he was very happy with the results. I called them they sent out a wonderful servicemen, Gerardo Gonzalez. The builders had used 3/8” pipes and Lowe’s seemed to only have 1/4” connectors. Gerardo solved our problem and we had to get Lowe’s out again the next day to finish the install. We highly recommend Goettl and appreciate the caliber of their staff!

This is how a service/install company should work. Price was exactly as quoted and was very fair, comparing to multiple others. They never tried to add on extras like all the others did. Installation day was when they said it would be. They scheduled the building permit, attended the inspection, and it was on time. We have been Sadi club members for years. The service is excellent from the customer service representatives that answer the phone to the individual technicians that come out to your home. Two years ago we replaced our AC unit and went with a Goettl installation after years of having them maintain our older unit.

We called on a Saturday and thankfully Christian Acosta was the one on call to help us out.
