What Is Short Cycling?
Considering how hot it can be in our area, and how long the heat can stick around throughout the year, it is pretty safe to say that keeping your air conditioner in great working condition should be a top priority. That being said, even the best air conditioners on the market, and even those that receive regular tune-ups, can run into operational problems from time to time. Of course, you don’t want to wait for your air conditioner to break down entirely before you go ahead and schedule professional air conditioning repairs. That is why you should be on the lookout for any problems that may require professional repair services. One that is pretty hard to ignore is short cycling. It has a number of drawbacks in terms of AC performance, and can hint at some pretty serious underlying problems with your system.
What It Is
When your air conditioner runs, it is supposed to do so in regular and even cycles. It shouldn’t be cooling your home down to extremely cold temperatures, then sitting idly as the temperature rises back up again. It also shouldn’t be starting up, running only very briefly, and then shutting back down, only to start back up, run briefly again, and then shut back down once more. This latter phenomenon is what we call short cycling.
What’s the Problem?
Quite a few, actually. If your air conditioner is starting and stopping much more frequently than it should be, then it is going to suffer a lot of unnecessary wear and tear. This increases the risk of damage to your system. Short cycling also drives up energy costs. It requires more energy to start an air conditioner up than it does to keep one running at a regular clip, after all. If your system has to start itself over and over, it is going to cost you more to run. Not only that, but its performance quality will drop. That leaves you paying more for less comfort!
What’s the Cause?
There are a lot of different reasons why an air conditioner may short cycle. Not all of them are terribly serious, either. For instance, you could have a very dirty air filter in your system. This will restrict airflow to the point that the system starts to overheat as it tries to cool your home. It will then shut itself down to prevent damage. Changing the filter should solve the problem if this is the case.
It could also be a huge issue underlying the symptom, though. Has your air conditioner always short cycled? If so, then your system may actually be too big for your home. That may not sound like a big deal. After all, it will cool your home more quickly that way, right? Well, yes, it will cool your home. But at the expense of your budget and the condition of your system, as mentioned above.
You could also have a refrigerant leak in your air conditioner. That may not cause an immediate breakdown, but it is one of the more serious issues that you can encounter. Refrigerant plays an integral role in the operation of your AC. Running an AC with a low refrigerant charge can do serious compressor damage, which may result in the need for replacement. Great review for Goettl Plumbing.We had an blockage in our sewer line.Tyler Leija was dispatched the same day, and found the blockage using a camera tool.He cleared the blockage temporarily.The actual fix would require digging up and replacing the bad area of pipe.Paulo "Adrian" Dado and his crew came out the next day with backhoe, dug up the area, and replaced the section of pipe.The next day, after inspection, Adrian and his crew filled in the hole and then cleaned up the area.This is a brief description. There was A LOT of work involved.Very professional work.

We were hearing hammering between the walls. Tyler came out to my home to perform an evaluation. After doing several tests he quickly found the issue. We discussed several options. I ultimately opted to have the problem fixed to avoid damage to other appliances. He completed the work in a timely manner.
Peter helped a lot with explaining the root cause of our AC unit not functioning as well as it should be, and explaining why he recommended the fix/parts that he did. Took plenty of time to troubleshoot what was actually going on as opposed to just treating the symptoms, and explained in an easy-to-understand way what he found and how to fix it. He also gave good advice about simple DIY maintenance we can do moving forward to keep the system healthy! Our AC went down for the upstairs unit. We have a maintenance plan through another company but they do not provide 24/7 service. I called Goettl and I am so happy I did. Roy A. was a pleasure to work with. He thoroughly and expertly explained all of the issues with my system with pictures and videos. He was transparent about the remediation options available to me and patiently reviewed each option with me. The install team, Daniel and Roy, were equally as awesome. They too were extremely knowledgeable, patient with my questions, and worked diligently to get my new unit up and running safely in one day. I couldn’t have asked for a better team.

The water softener (which is outside) was ruined by the recent weather. Rudy and Chris were able to diagnose the problem and replaced the softener on same day. This was critical to avoid any plumbing problems in the house. We appreciate their professionalism and attention email to detail.

My technician Jorge (George) Gutierrez was out today performing the a/c system check. He did a fabulous job and identified significant issues and concerns for the longevity of my current 12 year old system. He was very knowledgeable and helpful on what my options are and in the end I’ll be getting a new system instead of worrying about the current system failing in our extremely hot temperatures. He was very respectful of my home and my dog was ecstatic to meet him.
Frank identified the need for new faucets in the master bath and discussed my preferences. The type of faucet being replaced is no longer available (mini wide spread) so he had to do some research to come up with a solution. Had to be ordered, not surprisingly, and we appreciate his conscientious performance.
